RCC-238D Internet and Emerging Technology Impact Lab The Internet and Emerging Technology Impact Lab is an important dynamic innovative environment that acts as both a think-tank and demonstration lab around the development emerging technologies. It's specifically geared towards technologies that have the potential to have disruptive effects on the production of media and major impact upon the evolution of Canadian Culture organizations and their media associated professions. It's part of the Mixed Reality Production Cluster in the RCC, EDGE: Experiential Design and Gaming Environment Lab and a working relationship and technology exchange agrement with Ryerson's Digital Media Zone. Disruptive technologies have forever changed the production and distribution of mainstream media…..In recent years all forms of traditional media have been forever changed by the introduction of new technologies and distribution methods. The print media, recording industry and radio industry have been radically changed by a "do it yourself" Maker culture and Internet distribution. Currently Canada's television industry is experiencing radical changes and the film industry is expected not to be far behind. Purpose Of Lab: Today, while we have many academics and institutions that generate thoughtful research and reflection in this area, Canada lacks laboratories and test beds that focus on content development for emerging communication technologies. In recent years, governments have embraced "entrepreneurial incubators" as a methodology to stimulate development of business models for Digital Media. However youthful media innovators, who look to these organizations for support, must approach incubators with "semi-cooked" idea's in order to be considered. The focus of the Internet and Emerging Technology Impact Lab is on an environment that combines new and mainstream communication technologies, with students, staff and faculty from Ryerson's Communication and Design programs. This combination serves as the ingredients to seed new ideas and develop the basic technological skills and business accruement for consideration by an incubator environment. While one of the purposes of the lab is to bring "thought leaders" as mentors to further development in this field, its labs and distributed infrastructure will focus on emerging disruptive technologies and the production of media as its key interaction point. Mission: Seeding Understanding Before Commercialization - Long before new communication technologies can be "entrepreneurialized" students, artists, teachers and technologists require time to play, explore, remix and develop content prototypes to spark the entrepreneurial process and seed new ideas. Tomorrow's communications methodologies will emerge from today's experience via a prevalent "Maker" modality, open source idea's and a prevalent "remix" culture that's planted amongst our youth. Group Projects Supported By The Emerging Technology Lab
Technology In The Internet and Emerging Technology Impact Lab - The technologies in the Internet and Emerging Technology Impact Lab are meant to turn over rapidly. They are available to projects and for academic use as per the Rogers Communications Centre's "Policy For Use of Non Lab Housed Technology In The Rogers Communications Centre" and the lab serves as a showplace for those being experimented with. Current technologies (as of August 2010) include; Emotiv EPOC The Emotiv EPOC is a high resolution, neuro-signal acquisition and processing wireless neuroheadset. Red Digital One Camera The Red One was announced in 2006 and released in 2007 as the first camera produced by Red Digital Cinema Camera Company. It has a 12 megapixel bayer pattern CMOS sensor, called the Mysterium. The sensor measures 24.4 mm by 13.7 mm, and has 4,520 by 2,540 active pixels, though the camera only records data from a 4096 by 2304 pixel area in normal operation. The Mysterium sensor has about the same active area as a 35 mm film frame masked to the 16:9 aspect ratio, allowing the same angle of view and depth of field as Super 35 film format. The camera also allows the sensor to be used in a windowed mode in which the sensor can emulate the active area of a Super 16 film frame while capturing 2048 pixel resolution footage. This allows the camera to be used with Super 16 lenses. http://bit.ly/cGtfZdCanon 5D Mark II Camera The 5D Mark II was the first DSLR to feature 1080p video recording. The 16:9 aspect ratio portion of the sensor used in video mode is equivalent in sensitive area to a VistaVision 8/35 frame, even larger than the Super 35 frame of the much more expensive Red One camera. This large sensor allows videos to be recorded with very shallow depth of field for a "film look". The 21 megapixel sensor is downsampled to HD resolution by only using every third line and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Movie clips can be up to 4 GB in size, approximately 12 minutes of 16:9 HD (1920x1080) or 24 minutes of 4:3 SD (640x480) footage (depending on scene complexity). These limits stem from the 4 GB maximum file size supported by the FAT32 filesystem format used on Compact Flash cards. The camera also imposes a hard maximum clip length of 29 minutes 59 seconds if the 4 GB limit has not already been reached. Video clips are recorded as Quicktime MOV files with H.264/MPEG-4 (Base Profile @ L5) compressed video and uncompressed PCM audio at 48 kHz. Although the internal microphone is mono, stereo audio is supported through the audio input jack.Click Here for a Pocket Guide on the Canon 5D Mark II Camera.
