The Advanced Media Lab (RCC-224) was set up to support the creation of DVD's using Apple’s DVD Studio, the teaching of Final Cut Pro and associated video editing software. It's the first computer lab at Ryerson to be fitted with Blu-ray burners that allow students to distribute their media in 24p HDTV. The room also provides an authoring environment for MAX/MSP and Jitter. It's a 24 hour a day accessible lab that has 30 student seats. Teaching faculty have their own 8 Core (Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors) Mac Pro connected to Smart Technologies SMART Board 600i interactive whiteboard system to aid classroom teaching and learning. When the lab is in "drop in" mode this extra station allows for 31 student use computers.

The non-linear editing package is Final Cut Studio that is the central piece of software in the lab. It includes Final Cut Pro 7, Soundtrack Pro 3, Motion 4, DVD Studio Pro 4, Compressor 3.5 and Colour 1.5. To support Physical Computing MAX/MSP/Jitter and Processing are found in the lab. Other software on the labs computers includes FireFox and Safari web browsers with Windows Media/Flash Plugins, ADOBE's popular After Effects and Creative Suite 4 programs, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Deep Freeze. The MacPro's also contain all of the software that comes bundled with the Mac. In the case of the Mac Pro these programs include iTunes programmed to access FCAD's online sound effects server, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb, and GarageBand.

From a hardware perspective the lab is a complete Intel processor based MacPro workstation environment with the latest MacPro's featuring 8 Core (2.26GHz Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors), 6 GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 Graphic Cards with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and two dual-link DVI ports, Primary Hard Drives - 640 GB SATA, Secondary Hard Drive 640 GB SATA, 18x Superdrives, Dual-channel 4Gb Fibre Channel PCI Express cards and 20" Cinema Displays. The lab also boasts Smart Technologies SMART Board 600i interactive whiteboard system for teaching purposes, scanners, dual layer DVD burners built into the MacPro workstations, along with USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394 B on all the computers. The computers are interconnected to Ethernet via a gigabit speed network and some to the X-SAN storage system via fiber optic cables.
