RCC 346A&B - Foley Theatre - Control Room & Foley Studio - This new facility opened in Fall 2008 and is a direct result of the increased floor space brought about from the space vacated by CJRT FM. The area has been designed to operate as a state of the art Foley recording area with a large recording studio attached to a Foley recording and mixing facility.


The RCC-346A Foley Control Room is the technological centre of the facility. Its comprised of a sleek and stylish mid-sized 24-channel Digidesign® C|24® control surface. The surface provides powerful and hands-on control of Pro Tools® mixing, recording, and editing functions. A Digidesign 96 I/O™ 16-channel digital audio interface is employed for recording and playback. It features 24-bit A to D and D to A converters and 96 kHz sampling, a Mac Pro quad core/Samsung 24" Widescreen combo that houses Pro Tools 8.

For critical audio decisions the room is equipped with legendary Yamaha monitors that offer flat response and excellent resolution. It allows users to truly hear subtle details. Also employed in the room are compact and high-performance Dynaudio BM5a powered monitors and the accompanying Dynaudio BM9S Sub Woofer and Behringer POWERPLAY PRO-8 for headphone monitoring. Even the video in this facility is first rate. It's equipped with a Marantz DV6001 Universal DVD player that includes internal Dolby Digital and DTS decoders while operating six 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters internally and is DVD-A and SA-CD equipped.

Technology in the RCC-346A Foley Control Room

Pro Tools|HD® - is the Oscar® and Grammy® award-winning audio production software known for its sound quality, processing power, and workflow efficiency. Employing a dedicated DSP, Pro Tools|HD delivers performance and the low latency during production. The software components allow for audio editing, mixing, processing, MIDI sequencing, automation; and video integration. Its employs 48-bit mixing architecture, allows for 300 dB of dynamic range and, as in the case of the Foley Theatre, employs high-resolution 24-bit/192 kHz audio interfaces. The software offers a range of options from pristine EQ, dynamics plug-ins to unique effects. Elements like reverbs, amp emulators, samplers, and other virtual instruments, are available from hundreds of plug-ins created by Digidesign and the industry’s largest third-party developer community.

Digidesign C24 Console - The C|24 provides hands-on access to the recording, editing, routing, and mixing functions in Pro Tools software. Its control surface features 24 bankable channel strips, each with a touch-sensitive, motorized fader; high-quality rotary encoder and LED ring; dedicated Mute, Solo, and channel select illuminated buttons; and dedicated Input, Record, EQ, Dynamics, Insert, Send, and Automation buttons. It also features many more Edit commands, windows management controls, and dedicated buttons than Control|24, plus a Soft Keys section that supports the latest advanced automation features in Pro Tools.

Digidesign Pro Tools|HD 96 I/O™ - The Digidesign 96 I/O™ offers a high definition, multi-channel audio interface that makes recording in this facility "state of the art". The unit allows for 16-channel digital audio that employs 24-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) as well as 24-bit digital-to-analog (D/A) employed in 96 I/o's converters. The 96 I/O supports sample rates of up to 96 kHz for superior dynamic range and low noise floor. Other sample rates include 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, and 96 kHz via digital ports such as S/PDIF, AES/EBU, and Optical (ADAT) digital inputs and outputs.

Mac Pro Quad Core - On the computing side the suite is centred around a Mac Pro Quad Core that features two 2.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors, 8MB shared L2 cache per processor, 64-bit data paths and registers, 1.33GHz, 64-bit dual independent frontside buses 4GB 800Mhz DDR2, ECC Fully-Buffered FB-DIMM, Eight FB-DIMM slots, an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI) with 256MB of GDDR2 SDRAM. The Mac Pro has support for digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels that meets HDTV standards, dual-link DVI ports support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels and support for analog resolutions up to 2048 by 1536 pixels through either its one single-link DVI port or one dual-link DVI port. The units dual display support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes and if extended the Mac can support up to eight displays as it has 300W to power up to four PCI Express graphics cards.

Samsung 245BW LCD Monitor - Attached to the Mac Pro Quad Core is Samsung's 245BW LCD Monitor. The 245BW employs MagicBright³ that automatically optimizes brightness, contrast and gamma correction, based on the specific application. On this monitor the bigger the difference between light and dark images, the more vibrant images will appear given its high contrast ratio of 3000:1.

Yamaha HS80M Monitor Speakers - In a recording studio two kinds of speakers are used. Monitor speakers that allow engineers and producers to hear all of the sound that is recorded and listening speakers that provide acoustics closer to the consumer listening environment. In the audio industry the legendary Yamaha NS10M became a standard monitor speaker and it is still in use in many studios throughout the world. Today the Yamaha HS80M carries on this tradition with accuracy and detail. They help users make great mixes and allow for monitoring for long stretches of time with minimum fatigue. The Yamaha HS80M monitor speakers installed in the Foley Control Room offer a flat response and excellent resolution that allows uses of the facility to hear subtle details that make the difference between good and great sound.

Dynaudio BM5a and BM9S Sub Woofer - For listening speakers the facility employs Dynaudio BM5a Powered Two-way Active Nearfield Monitors. This high-performance monitor is of a compact design and is extremely well suited for production environments in music monitoring and mixing, broadcasting, OB vans, edit suites, playback suites, project studios and smaller post production facilities. The companion Dynaudio BM9S Sub Woofer complements the outstanding speaker system in this room by delivering that extra punch to the bottom The BM9S delivers a clear, crispy and surprisingly powerful punch through its closed cabinet design. This creates an internal pressure where the woofer gains a considerable amount of precision in delivering low frequency signals.

Marantz DV6001 Universal DVD Single Disc Player - is a quality universal players that combines universality and quality by handling movie DVDs, DVD-As, SA-CDs, conventional music CDs, recordable CD-R/-RWs, VCD 2.0 discs, MP-3 and WMA audio discs and JPEG picture discs. The unit includes internal Dolby Digital and DTS decoders while operating six 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters internally. Internal bass management circuits route DVD-A and SA-CD audio channels directly to the proper speakers with the video circuitry turned off. The units video technology includes 3:2 pull down circuitry, wide bandwidth video D/A converters, composite, S-Video, component outputs video outputs with progressive scan. The unit contains a variety of audio and video outputs including a D-BUS connector.

Gefen CAT-5 5500 Series DVIUSB Extender - The facility used Gefen's ex•tend•it CAT5•5500. It allows users the benefits of extending USB, audio, and video signals beyond the desktop. In the case of the Foley Control Room the unit is used to deliver the video requiring Foley, ADR or music scoring from the Digital Audio Workstation to the production studio's Sharp Aquos LCD Screen.

Behringer POWERPLAY PRO-8 HA8000 - For headphone monitoring the facility contains a POWERPLAY PRO-8 HA8000. It offers the highest sonic quality with virtually all types of headphones even at maximum volume. It's is a professional, high-power multi-purpose 8-channel headphone distribution amplifier featuring eight totally independent stereo high-power amplifier sections, 2 separate main inputs, 2 headphone outputs per channel and a dedicated direct input for each channel.

M-Audio AXIOM 61 - The M-Audio® Axiom® 61 controller combines all the production power and performance you need to get the most from your music software and MIDI gear. Key features include; Semi-weighted keys, 9 mixer-style faders and 8 smooth rotary encoders, Axiom Instrument Mode, a single button instantly maps the faders, buttons, and encoders to any virtual instrument inside your DirectLink-compatible host.

The RCC-346B Foley Studio - Being a recording studio and sparse by comparison to the control room, the RCC-346B Foley Studio Theatre is where much of the "Foley" action happens. While it is currently in the process of being equipped with Foley pits and surfaces, the technology assigned to the studio includes an AQUOS 46" 1080p LCD for viewing footage for Foley and ADR applications, a Behringer POWERPLAY PRO-8 for headphone monitoring prerecorded audio and Yorkville Audio YSM1p Environmentally Processed Active Studio Monitors.

Technology in the RCC-346B Foley Studio

Samsung 245BW LCD Monitor - The 245BW employs MagicBright³ that automatically optimizes brightness, contrast and gamma correction, based on the specific application. On this monitor the bigger the difference between light and dark images, the more vibrant images will appear given its high contrast ratio of 3000:1.

AQUOS 46" 1080p LCD - For tasks that involve chasing for Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR), Foley and/or Music/Soundtrack mixing, the suite employs an AQUOS LC-46D64U 46" 1080p LCD display for Audio for Video applications. The display features the full HD Spec at 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, displays HDTV materials in 1080p, employs a response time of less than 4 ms, uses a 4-Wavelength backlight system to provide for vivid reds, allows for wide viewing angles (176º H / 176º V) while dividing each pixel into two sections that provides a 60% improvement to color reproduction at wide viewing angles, has high brightness output of 450 cd/m², a true contrast ratio of 2000:1, a dynamic contrast ratio of 10000:1, three HDMI™ (version 1.3), dual component inputs and an RGB PC input that allows for the AQUOS to be used as into a PC monitor.

Yorkville Audio YSM1p Speakers - The Yorkville Audio YSM1 p system is an advanced powered studio monitor designed specifically for recording and home audio applications. Building on the success of the Yorkville studio monitor line, the active YSM1 p uses a rugged, shielded 6.5 inch 100-Watt woofer and a shielded inch silk dome tweeter. The drivers are center aligned vertically and mounted slightly forward to minimize reflections off the baffle. A precisely tuned 2 inch cylindrical port, directly below the woofer, increases bass response and allows the cabinet size to be kept compact. The system incorporates a bi-amped power module that delivers 11.5 watts (85 Watts of power to the woofer, 30 Watts to the tweeter) and generates less than 0.05% distortion. The YSM1 p also features a +9dB / -6dB input trim control, a defeatable limiter, specialized tweeter overpower limiting and woofer over-excursion limiting.
