Audio Production Facilities The Faculty of Communication and Design is committed to quality Audio facilities for students in our various programs. The Audio Facilities at Ryerson University are operated in either a school specific or FCAD wide shared manner. The shared facilities offer access to all FCAD faculties and students' providing that appropriate training has been undertaken by the student's home school. From the student's perspective, whether they use shared or school specific facilities, they will find that the technology has been designed so audio can flow freely between all of the facilities. Since the acquisition of CJRT Radio's control rooms and recording studio's that included the departure of JAZZ.FM91 in the fall of 2008, the facilities have been changed substantially.RCC-168 - The Audio Library The Audio Library is the centre of operations for the audio facilities in the Rogers Communications Centre. The audio library staff administer both RTA specific and shared audio facilities that FCAD classes can make use of.

This unique service uses the Apple iTunes interface to both catalogue and download audio from the sound effects library. Shared labs that have this service installed include the Virtual Audio Lab, the Visual Computing Lab, the Apple Learning Lab, the enclosed Non Linear Editing suites, all Rogers Communications Centre's first and third floor audio production facilities, the IMA-302 Recording and Mixing Facility in Image Arts and all of the MacBooks associated with the Hybrid Computing Media Lab and the Mixed Reality Production environment. Please note that access to the sound effects library is only licensed to the campus and off-site laptops cannot access the library. The Sound Effects Server is part of a shared FCAD Media Server System that distributes media such as Shoutcast Streaming Technology to distribute streaming audio in MP3 format, H.264 MPEG-4 to distribute streaming video and a Windows Media server that provides the ability to server proprietary live Windows Media formats. RCC-168 Transfer Stations RCC-168 Transfer Stations - are shared facilities between the RTA, Theatre, Image Arts and Journalism programs. These stations are comprised of Core Duo Intel Mac Pro computers and contain a CD and DVD with burning capabilities that are useful for transfers. In addition they have a multitude of software packages including Power DVD, Nuendo, Indeo 5.0 Codecs, Vegas, DVD Architect, Reason, Nero, Acid Pro, discWelder Chrome, SurCode MLP Encoder, Melodyne, Nuendo Dolby Digital Encoder, UAD-1, Soundforge XP Studio and Microsoft Office. They also have a have a Tascam US-428 attached as an I/O. Its a 16 channel sound board, with mic preamps; a CD player, a DAT machine attached to the four of the computers.
IMA-302 Recording and Mixing Facility IMA-302 Recording and Mixing Facility - is located in the Image Arts building on Bond Street. This shared audio area includes first rate recording and mixing rooms and is being updated with a workstation and control pad that will work equally well with both Protools HD and Nuendo in the mixed use environment required in the complex. The facility is the first Protools system installed on campus that is capable of 7.1 surround sound. Protools was added to the 7.1 Nuendo facility and the studio includes a Foley work pit and high definition projector. The facility completes the Image Arts Film programs workflow that integrates Protools technology as part of the curriculum.
Virtual Audio Production Lab Virtual Audio Production Lab - This lab that is really truly unique at Ryerson. The shared lab works by equipping each school with fifteen audio production laptops that are loaned to students for production needs as required. The two Schools have agreed that during the first four weeks of each Academic semester either School can ask that all of the laptops that make up the Virtual Lab be assembled in a common area for "mass training" purposes. Hence the "virtual" concept allows for flexibility for mass technology/software training at the start of a semester and then frees up the technology for the rest of the semester for use in the field. The concept saves the University valuable space along with the overhead costs of keeping the computers in a fixed location. The laptops are equipped with Nuendo and Vegas software that meets a variety of basic audio production needs relevant to both schools. The software is the same that is in use in all in-house fixed audio facilities allowing students to move materials created on the laptops amongst a variety of facilities that exist at Ryerson. The common software platform means the laptops software can take advantage of in-house curricular training, technical expertise and operational support. Each Panasonic CF-51 laptop is equipped with wireless networking, comes with the ability to burn CD's and DVD's, has firewire and USB connections to interconnect student owned storage and is equipped with an external M-Audio interface that allows for professional XLR audio interfaces that meet professional production standards. To allay concerns about the durability of the laptops computers that were purchased, Panasonic provides a 3 year warranty that includes parts coverage and a 48 hour repair turnaround should they require a repair. This kind of warranty coverage does not stretch existing IT staff as in the case of a hardware failure the staff needs only to courier the laptop to Panasonic with the understanding that it will be returned repaired within 48 hours.
