Paper Size (Platen) / Film Size (Film)

Select an option below to match the type of document being scanned. The aspect ratio of the preview area changes in accord with the selected setting when a Paper Size setting is selected. If you select [Film] in [Select Source], [Paper Size] changes to [Film Size].

Platen Selected in [Select Source]

* Business Card
* 4"x6" Landscape
* 4"x6" Portrait
* A5 Landscape
* A5 Portrait
* A4
* Letter
* Full Platen

For Macintosh, you can also select: L Landscape, L Portrait, Hagaki Landscape, Hagaki Portrait, LL Landscape, LL Portrait, and B5.

Film Selected in [Select Source]

[Paper Size] changes into [Film Size]. This setting is not selectable when the display mode is set to thumbnail display on. Click [Thumbnail] button to display the entire film, and then select [35mm Strip] or [35mm Slide].

If you do not know the size of an item, select [Full Platen] in [Paper Size]. Then, after the preview scan, you can select an area before scanning.
If you change the paper size after the preview scan, the preview image is cleared.
The Letter size is primarily used in North America and is relatively close to the A4 size.

Color Mode

This setting determines how the scanned image is reproduced according to the type of document.

Black and White
(platen only)
Select this mode when outputting photos and other items to a monochrome printer.
Grayscale Select this mode to scan black and white photos or monochrome images. It expresses images in 254 shades (8 bit) of gray and black and white.
Grayscale(16bit)
(film only)
Select this mode to scan monochrome photos and film. It expresses images in 65536 shades of gray (16 bit) of gray and black and white.
Color Select this mode to scan color photos, documents and film. It expresses images in 256 colors (8 bits) for each R(ed), G(reen) and B(lue) color channel.
Color(48bit) Select this mode to scan color photos in greater detail. It expresses images in 65536 colors (16 bit) for each R(ed), G(reen) and B(lue) color channel.
Text Enhanced
(platen only)
Select this mode to scan text more crisply, particularly to process it in an OCR program. It expresses images in black and white but it requires more time for scanning than [Black and White] does, because the image is first scanned in grayscale, then converted into black and white. Scan with [Output Resolution] set to 600 dpi or less. This mode is not available for Macintosh.

The [Color(48bit)] will not be displayed unless the [Enable 48/16 bit Output] option has a checkmark in the [Scan] sheet, displayed by clicking the [Preferences] button in the Advanced Mode.
Some applications cannot receive images scanned in [Color(48bit)] or [Grayscale(16bit)].

Input Size

When Platen is selected in [Select Source], [Paper Size] is displayed before the preview scan and the cropping frame size is displayed after the preview scan.

When Film is selected in [Select Source] and the thumbnail display is on, nothing is displayed before the preview scan and the film size is displayed after the preview scan.

When Film is selected in [Select Source] and the thumbnail display is off, nothing is displayed before the preview scan and a cropping frame size corresponding to [Film Size] setting is displayed after the preview scan.

Normally, you do not need to adjust this setting, but you can use it to make fine adjustments to the scan area (size of the cropping frame) after the preview scan by inputting values directly.

Width and Height Input values directly into the width and height boxes. After entering them, click another portion of the window or press the [Enter] key on the keyboard to change the cropping frame to those values.
Unit You can change the units (inches, centimeters or pixels) in which the width and height are displayed.

The scanner driver will automatically calibrate the scanner the first time it is used. Then the scanner will start the preview scan. Please wait until this process concludes.
With some applications, the size of the scanned data is limited. Area that can be scanned is as follows:
- 21000 x 30000 pixels or less
- 10000 x 30000 pixels or more ([Color (48 bit)] or [Grayscale (16 bit)])
The maximum values that can be input correspond to the selected paper size. The minimum values, however, are 96 x 96 pixels when the scale has been set to 100% and the [Output Resolution] set to 600 dpi.
The aspect ratio is unlocked when the auto crop function is used so that priority is given to the size of the selected area.
