The People Behind the Rogers Communications Centre
Academic Operations Group

Scope

The Academic Operations group is responsible for the overall scheduling of RCC's Shared facilities, the operation of the Interformat Room, Television Studio C, Advanced Media Lab I, the workflow associated with FCAD's Non Linear Editing Facilities, operates the flexible classroom space that's associated with the Mixed Reality Production Cluster. The Cluster includes the RCC-357 (Hybrid Computing Lab), RCC-359a (Mixed Reality Extension Lab), RCC-359b (Visual Computing Lab) and RCC-361 (Electronic Field Production and Practice Lab).

In 08-09 the Academic Operations Group was designated to directly support all shared audio facilities in the RCC in areas of operation, booking and oversight. These shared audio facilities include 15 production labs and the SPIRIT Internet radio studios. They consist specifically of the RCC-168 Transfer Stations, IMA-302 Recording and Mixing Facility, Virtual Audio Production Lab, RCC-348 7.1 Mixing and High Definition Audio For Video Suite, RCC-346B Foley Mixing Theatre, RCC-346A Foley Studio, RCC-346/346D/346E/346F Personal Production Suites, RCC-340C Auxiliary Studio, RCC-342 Multi Track Control Room, RCC-344 Multi Track Recording Studio, RCC-164D Personal Shared Audio Work Stations, RCC-340B Spirit Control Room and RCC-349A Spirit Studio.

The unit consists of six positions; the Lead Technology Delivery, the Lead New Media, the Video Lab Assistant, the Television Studio Support Lab Assistant, the New Media Lab Assistant, and the Shared Audio Lab Assistant which is a temp position. In addition the Groups role related to New Media includes the mandate to assist with the growth of New Media technologies in the Undergraduate, Graduate and Research space.
Tina Collier, Lead, Technology Delivery Specialist

Tina's role is akin to a technical director. Her position is responsible for the overall booking of all RCC's labs, she oversees the operation of TV Studio C, oversees the operation of the Video Post Area, directly implements the development of Ryersons non-linear workflow, and oversees the operation of shared TV Studio systems including the Intercom and lighting systems that are common to all of the TV Studios.

In addition her position responsibilities include working with security on access needs that fall outside of normally booked hours including programming issues related to 24 hour room access. Her duties include inspecting and maintaining the production facilities, leading workshops on editing and production, and coordinating equipment repair. She also assists faculty and students with their technical or production queries and may get involved with work for external clients or research. Tina has been instrumental in developing the non-linear editing systems used in the Centre as well as the upgrades to Television Studio C, that made it Canada's first 16*9 all digital studio for education. She's developed the access scenarios for Ryerson's X-SAN implementation as well as the needs to implement Final Cut Server. She also pioneered the practicalities of Ryerson's HDTV off-line/online editing process.

On top of that, this RTA grad is a pyrotechnician and often works Paramount Canada's Wonderland holiday weekend fireworks shows. Tina rang in the New Century running one of the fireworks barges that was part of Toronto's spectacular new millennium fireworks show.

Sal GrecoSal Greco, Video Lab Assistant

Sal Greco is the true ambassador of the Rogers Communications Centre having worked for Ryerson since the early 1970's. The experience that Sal brings to the Rogers Centre is unparalleled. In 1967 as a teenager, Sal directed 2 films for the National Film Board of Canada, one of which was a video commemorating Canada's Centennial Year. Over the years Sal has produced a number of independent video's with his most recent in support of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund called "Art, Apartheid and Political Change."

As the Video Lab Assistant Sal works primarily in the Video Post area oversing the facilities relating to audio production, computer graphics, multimedia software, and the non-linear editing suites found in the Post Production Area and video eady workstations in Advanced Media Lab I. He is is also responsible for identifying maintenance issues and to facilitate individual student bookings in the enclosed editing suites and audio facilities. A great deal of his time is spent operating the InterFormat room where video material is copied when it is a curricular necessity.

Kevin Cordick, Television Studio Support Lab Assistant

Kevin's's primary role is to provide on-site technical and production support for clients who use Television Studio C equipment and facility. He also assists the Lead Hand in operating some of the other television systems that are used in the Rogers Communication Centre's TV studios that support the academic curriculum of the different Schools in the Faculty of Communication and Design. He also provides back up for other Lab Assistants that oversee the production labs in the Rogers Communication Centre.

Jeremy Littler, Lead New Media Support

Jeremy assists both the Academic Director, Rogers Communications Centre and Program Director, Rogers Communications Centre and acts as the Lead hand in the development of, delivery of services, organization of ongoing support services and technology implementation that relates to the requirements of Ryerson's advanced new media curriculum and SRC activities. A major goal of the position is to provide a base of understanding to deploy the next generation of New Media production technologies.

The work includes the operation of emerging computer production systems, to work closely with key faculty, staff and advisory committees to support computer systems as they related to New Media development activities.

Barry Weatherhead, New Media Lab Support Assistant

Barry assists the New Media Lead hand by providing on-site delivery of many of the facilities. The position requires the set-up, the execution of and client assistance with the facilities booking systems, the oversight and operation of various labs (primarily computer and New Media Labs including their equipment and supply inventories), carrel labs, meeting rooms, lecture/seminar spaces, and the operation of the various media production and software systems that are employed in the Rogers Communications Centre. Duties include charging laptops, ensuring the correct inventory in HCL vending machine and laptop safes. Barry is key to setting up the labs for each class as a flexible space including ensuring portable presentation technology. He also backs up the Video Lab Assistant, TV Studio Support Assistant and the Shared Audio Lab Assistant in cases of absence.

Preston Patey, Shared Audio Lab Support Assistant

Preston assists the New Media Lead hand by providing on-site delivery of the Shared Audio production facilities as his primary function. The position requires the set-up, the execution of and client assistance with the facilities booking systems, the oversight and operation of various labs (primarily the Shared Audio facilities), carrel labs, meeting rooms, lecture/seminar spaces, and the operation of the various media production and software systems that are employed in the Rogers Communications Centre. He also backs up the Video Lab Assistant, TV Studio Support Assistant and the Shared Audio Lab Assistant in cases of absence.
